The coaches explain what happened to the athlete who was hit in the head by a bar

An accident involving weight lifting has drawn attention to the risks of the practice. During the aftermath, the practice was related to crossfit, but mod experts explain that this is not the case. “He did Cross Training. The risk of Cross Training is related to gyms that are not affiliated, have no specific courses, so the movement pattern is not followed,” says Cláudio Bernardino Vieira Jr., crossfit instructor better known as Cadu.
Modality instructor Luiz Martins also explains that crossfit is a practice regulated by an international body, which owns the brand and methodology of this sport. All gyms in Brazil that offer crossfit classes must be affiliated with the body. Otherwise, the safety of the athletes and all those involved could be at risk.
According to Luiz, the practice of Olympic weightlifting in Brazil is exclusive to crossfit academies and specialized training centers, such as clubs that work with competitions. The gymnasium where the accident took place, in Fortaleza, is not in the official crossfit centers map – or gyms affiliated with the official brand. However, CrossFit isn’t competent to stop a gym from offering weightlifting training, as Luiz explains.
Weightlifting
Cadu points out that in weightlifting work, as in an accident, it is necessary for a professional to accompany the movement and to know his practitioner to limit the load. “When the practitioner makes a mistake, someone needs to stand by to stop him from continuing. The video shows that no one has given this feedback,” he says.
“The practitioner seeking these activities should seek out professionals certified by the Regional Council of Physical Education (CREF), and also specialize in weightlifting. The CrossFit course and certificate empowers professionals to teach these classes, thus bringing confidence to all.” Cadu warns.
Luiz points out that, from the video of the incident, the athlete does not appear to be in a class facility. “He is alone there in that space and, in crossfit, the classes are in groups. There is always at least one teacher who teaches and guides the students”, he justifies.
But, as the coach adds, even this does not prevent such accidents from occurring in crossfit gyms that work with this movement. “That is why it is important for people to know where they are looking for the business, as well as having the support of a specialized professional,” he concludes.
