Monogamy refers to two partners who have no other partners, i.e. it means a monogamous and non-open relationship
Monogamy, open relationships, “tolyamor”, polyamory and many others: it is difficult to follow the new terms created to classify love relationships. But, wait, the idea of this text here is to start with the basics: after all, what is monogamy?
What is monogamy?
Monogamy is a social practice characterized by an exclusive loving relationship between two individuals. This exclusivity can manifest itself in different ways, from the sexual to the emotional and social sphere. But what exactly defines monogamy? And how does it differ from other types of relationships?
Monogamy, in essence, is based on maintaining only one romantic and/or sexual partner at a time. This exclusivity can be consensual, that is, agreed between the partners, or imposed by social or religious norms.
What is the difference between sexual and genetic monogamy?
It is important to differentiate sexual monogamy from genetic monogamy. The first refers to exclusivity in sexual practice, while the second is limited to biological reproduction with a single partner. This distinction becomes crucial in societies that allow polygamy, where sexual monogamy can coexist with the practice of having multiple partners for reproductive purposes.
Besides these, what are civil and social monogamy?
In addition to the sexual and genetic sphere, monogamy can manifest itself in other areas of life:
- Civil monogamy: Refers to the marital status of an individual who is single or married to only one person. This definition is supported by laws and regulations that define the rights and obligations within a monogamous marriage.
- Social monogamy: involves social norms and expectations regarding romantic relationships. In some societies, monogamy is considered the only acceptable relationship model, while in others different forms of relationships, such as polyamory and open relationships, are more accepted.

Data on monogamy
Monogamy is the most common type of relationship in many cultures around the world. It is estimated that approximately 90% of human societies are predominantly monogamous.
In late 2022, Tinder held a research with around four thousand users between 18 and 25 years old. Only 52% of them revealed that they were monogamous: this figure, however, represents a generational cross-section and it is not possible to know with certainty how many monogamists there are in the world. In Brazil there is no precise research on the topic, but according to 2020 IBGE data, 67.5% of Brazilian families were made up of couples.
