St. Nicholas Day
The story of Saint Nicholas is set in Myra, an ancient city in Türkiye. A man from a poor family had no money to give as dowry for the marriage of his three daughters, so there was fear that the girls would enter a life of slavery to survive.
However, Nicola, owner of a large fortune, learned of the existence of this family. In this way the saint collected in a small bag the money necessary to pay for the dowries of the three women. Finally, at dusk, the saint threw the bag of money into the fireplace of the house.
In addition to the fireplace, Saint Nicholas is closely associated with Santa Claus due to his appearance and the proximity of his commemorative date to Christmas. The legend still underlies the tradition of placing gifts or gold coins in children’s shoes, socks or baskets during the night before the feast of St. Nicholas.
