Diet soda may increase the risk of fatty liver; understand


Researchers have found that daily consumption of these drinks affects the functioning of the organ, causing cirrhosis, liver fibrosis and even cancer.

Researchers from Soochow University they found that consuming just one can of diet soda a day can increase the risk of fat buildup in the liver by 60%. According to researchers, drinking sugary drinks also increases your chances of developing the condition, known as metabolic steatotic liver disease (DEM).




“These findings challenge the common perception that these liquids are harmless and highlight the need to reconsider their role in diet and liver health, especially as DHEM emerges as a global health problem,” said the lead author of the research, Lihe Liu.

The effects of soft drinks on the liver

The survey, released earlier this week at the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopymonitored the medical data of 124,000 healthy people for ten years. Furthermore, during this period, participants also shared details about their eating habits.

Therefore, according to the study, it was possible to confirm that regular consumption of diet soft drinks is associated with increased cases of DHEM. The disease, formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, affects approximately 30% of the world’s population.

It is caused by hormonal changes that promote the accumulation of fat in the liver. According to health institutions, other conditions are responsible for deregulating hormones and triggering the disease, such as obesity and high cholesterol. Previous research even associates hypercholesterolemia with high consumption of these drinks.

What are the real risks?

The disease’s main threat, however, is complications, which include everything from hepatitis to cirrhosis to severe fibrosis to liver cancer. According to the study authors, frequent consumption of diet soft drinks also increases the likelihood of death from liver disease.

Traditional sugary drinks, in turn, increased the chance of diagnosis by 50%. Therefore, the results showed that the best way to maintain liver health is to drink water, as those who replaced dietary options with this natural liquid had a 15% risk reduction.
