Diagnosis
According to Maramélia, there are no formal recommendations or studies demonstrating the benefits of using screening methods for the condition in the entire population. In general, it is recommended to screen for aneurysms in people who have had cases in their family.
To detect the presence of lesions, the recommended test is angiotomography (an imaging test that combines computed tomography and contrast to visualize arteries and veins) or magnetic resonance imaging.
“Today it’s much easier to detect. 30 or 40 years ago we didn’t have these easy-to-access tests. We only had catheterization. But with technology and improved imaging in tests, we can identify small aneurysms.”
One point to keep in mind, the doctor emphasizes, is that aneurysms that do not rupture do not cause symptoms. “In some cases, they may grow and become more noticeable, but this happens in a small portion,” he points out. “For this reason, people often discover the painting unintentionally.”
In fact, Kim suggests that the aneurysm appeared due to stress. Maramélia, however, argues that the two are unrelated.
“There is a genetic predisposition, hence the need for family screening. Another point is that weakness of the arteries can worsen due to hypertension. Another condition closely associated with the formation and rupture of aneurysms is smoking“, explains.
Once diagnosed, the aneurysm must be treated immediately. Depending on the size and location, there are two treatments: open surgery or catheterization. With treatment, patients are able to lead a normal life.
