“I thought it would be the first and only time I would hug him,” Sydney wrote in the post. But, contrary to what the doctors indicated, the boy continued to live and is now 15 months old. On TikTok, the video of little Cooper’s first transport has already been viewed more than 2.3 million times.
Sydney detailed her journey to the portal Newsweek. In an interview, she said she was surprised when her son was born at 24 weeks’ gestation, just a week after she was diagnosed with preeclampsia. The condition is linked to the mother’s increased blood pressure during pregnancy and can pose many risks.
With the diagnosis, Sydney and her husband already imagined their son might be born prematurely, but they didn’t imagine it would happen so quickly. At 24 weeks and four days, during a routine check-up, Cooper’s heart began to beat more slowly and his mother was sent for an emergency caesarean section.

“Cooper was immediately intubated and taken to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Babies born this premature face numerous risks: brain bleeds, intestinal problems, vision problems and fragile lungs. Against all odds, Cooper escaped with almost all but his lungs,” Sydney told the outlet.
At the age of 10 days, the boy’s lungs began to fail. “The doctor told us that everything depended on Cooper. We hugged him tightly and prayed for a miracle. Cooper continued to fight and fight, proving everyone wrong,” the mother said.
The child underwent a series of surgeries, including one to close a 1/2-inch hole found in his heart. Despite all the difficulties, Cooper survived and is now 15 months old. He remains hospitalized in the pediatric intensive care unit of the hospital where he was born, without yet an expected discharge date.

His mother said every day presents new challenges, from adjusting the mechanical ventilator for his breathing to recovering from infections he developed in the hospital.
“Despite everything, Cooper is developing very well in his own way. His motor skills and cognitive development are adequate. The medical team believes that by the age of three he will be strong enough to have his tracheotomy removed,” Sydney said.
As for the child’s future, the mother confessed that Cooper’s lungs may be a little more sensitive, just as an asthmatic child suffers, for example. But he must attend school normally and live an ordinary, independent life.
