How many X-ray and MRI scans can be safely performed without generating harmful effects of radiation on the body?

Jean Barros, San Paolo

Answers Valdair Francisco Muglia, radiologist

the dose of radiation that we received during an exam X-ray it is usually very low. Its effect on the human body is evaluated using a unit called a sievert.

THE World Health Organization (WHO) recommends not exceeding the limit of 20 millisieverts per year. But, to give you an idea, during an X-ray examination, the radiation dose applied can vary between 0.02 and 0.06 millisieverts. This depends on the region of the body being examined.

The orientation of the Brazilian College of Radiology is to perform the best examination with the lowest possible dose of radiation, as excess radiation can cause severe damage, such as breakage of chromosomes and others genetic mutations.

However, as mentioned, the doses used in these tests are generally very safe and below the limit defined by the WHO. In cases of patients who need to perform many radioactive tests, in a very short time interval, the recommendation is to have a reduction in the doses used.

Regard magnetic resonance, does not involve ionizing radiation. Therefore, there are no risks in this regard.

The recommendation is to be aware of the presence of metal devices, such as prostheses, which are attracted to the magnetic field generated by the resonance device.
