Weight loss goes far beyond diet and exercise. Find out what factors stand in the way and understand how you can’t lose weight
Are you on a diet and exercise, but still can’t lose weight? These initiatives, which are the first steps towards weight loss, often don’t work by themselves. That is, if you are struggling to lose the fat you gained during the quarantine, it could be that some other problem is bothering you.
Dr. Marcia Simões, family doctor, warns of the importance of healthy weight loss and the dangers of obesity. “She is responsible for the development of other conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Therefore, being overweight keeps the body inflamed and prone to further aggravation,” she points out.
This shows that losing weight is generally a health necessity. But to lose weight in a healthy way, it’s important to understand what’s hindering your efforts.
1 – Rely on miraculous remedies
Nowadays it is increasingly easy to find diets and drugs that promise rapid weight loss sold without a prescription. “What we see in these cases is a very rapid weight loss on the scales, however, with it the vitamins and mineral salts of the organism go away, as well as the precious lean body mass”, advises Dr. Simões.
2 – Continue to consume inflammatory foods
Inflammatory foods are those that are produced at high temperatures and use a lot of preservatives in their preparation, usually processed foods. The doctor recommends avoiding fried foods and high fat foods, industrialized biscuits, snacks, instant noodles and soft drinks. “High doses of preservatives disrupt the rhythm of the body’s functioning and, consequently, the process of losing weight,” says the doctor.
3 – Untreated stress and anxiety
The expert points out that stress and anxiety are problems that directly affect our disposition, health, appetite and general well-being. They are triggers of an unhealthy lifestyle, such as a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, smoking and alcohol consumption, factors that hinder weight loss. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), stress affects 90% of the world’s population and almost 70% of Brazilians. Emotional balance is directly linked to the success of the pursuit of a healthier life and, consequently, weight control,” explains Dr. Simões.
4 – Not exercising regularly
It is not enough to practice physical activity sporadically to lose weight. To be considered physically active, you must perform any physical activity practice for more than 150 minutes a week, i.e. for half an hour five days a week. If the activity is vigorous, 75 minutes a week is enough.
According to the WHO, up to 5 million deaths a year could be prevented if the world’s population exercised more. “The regular practice of physical exercises increases cardiorespiratory capacity and accelerates the metabolism, increasing energy expenditure, as well as bringing a feeling of well-being”, concludes the specialist.
