Madonna Honors William Orbit After Producer's Death at 69

Madonna paid tribute to William Orbit, her longtime collaborator and acclaimed music producer, in an emotional Instagram post that highlighted the deep influence he had on her music and career.

Orbit, whose real name was William Wainwright, died on July 23, 2026, at age 69. He became widely known through his collaboration with Madonna in the late 1990s. His work on her 1998 album Ray Of Light earned him two Grammy Awards, and he won another for the song Beautiful Stranger.

A tribute posted on Instagram

On Saturday, August 8, Madonna wrote a lengthy Instagram post describing their meeting as a moment of artistic revelation. She said she realized music did not have to fit into categories or genres, so the two of them created their own. She said he pressed a magic button inside her, and she fell into a galaxy of unfulfilled dreams. His music, she said, gave her a magic carpet to fly on, and she visited many places, both sad and happy, along the way.

She accompanied her post with a photo from the time of their collaboration and a video from their joint appearance at the Grammy Awards ceremony for Ray Of Light.

She went on to say she sang in ways she had never sung before, using words without worrying whether they made sense. In many ways, she said, he was her own Ray Of Light, just as her daughter Lola, born around that same period, had been.

A new chapter, with Orbit by her side

Madonna described that period as the start of a new chapter in her life, with Orbit beside her helping her explore new musical directions. She said she was choosing a different path to walk, and he was right there next to her, with his crooked teeth and the genius way he listened to music. The studio, she said, often felt like a church, where she sat silently waiting for his ideas to burst out of the synthesizer or guitar before she ran with them.

She said she missed those days, adding that only he could have inspired her to write a song like Drowned World or Swim. She called him so special it was as if he came from another world, so unique. Years passed and she moved on, making music with other people, but she said she never forgot the magic time they spent together. She closed the post with a goodbye to "Billy Bubbles," saying she was lucky to have met him and to have fallen with him down the rabbit hole.

How the partnership began

The collaboration between Madonna and Orbit began after he remixed her songs Justify My Love and Erotica. In 1997, she chose him to produce Ray Of Light after he sent her a tape of instrumental tracks. His approach, blending techno with trip-hop influences, helped renew Madonna's sound. The album went on to sell more than 16 million copies worldwide.

An unanswered final album

Earlier this year, Orbit had revealed that he had written a new album meant to follow Ray Of Light, but said he received no response from Madonna despite his efforts to reach her. He said there were no bad feelings between them, adding that he would always love her and acknowledging her contribution to his career.

After Ray Of Light, Orbit also worked with Blur on the album 13, and he contributed to the production of hits for All Saints, U2 and Pink.
