Marcus Mumford has explained why wife Carey Mulligan bans music from their home.
The Mumford & Sons frontman, 39, said on the podcast Smartless that the Oscar-nominated actress, 41, prefers a music-free household because he becomes unable to hold a conversation whenever a song comes on. When music plays in the background, Mumford said, he cannot turn off that part of his brain and simply stops to listen.
He recalled that at a birthday party for Mulligan, a guest remarked there was no music. Mumford replied that they do not usually play music at home.
Mumford said he always ends up analyzing the lyrics, melody, and progression of any song, which deeply distracts him, and that he only listens to music when he is alone.
The couple, who have three children, Evelyn, 10, Wilfred, 8, and a two-year-old, met as children at a camp and became engaged in 2011.
