Marvel Cancels Wonder Man Series Over Disney+ Viewership

Marvel Studios has cancelled Wonder Man due to low Disney+ viewership numbers, lead star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and showrunner Andrew Guest revealed.

Marvel Cancels Wonder Man Series Over Disney+ Viewership

Marvel Studios has cancelled its Disney+ series Wonder Man due to low viewership figures, lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has revealed.

The decision comes only months after the Walt Disney Company originally announced a second season for the Marvel Television production in March, before corporate executives unexpectedly reversed course.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Abdul-Mateen said executives informed him that the cancellation had something to do with viewership numbers, although he was never given specific ratings figures. He explained that platform leaders ultimately determined that continuing the show did not make sense from a business standpoint.

Showrunner addresses cancellation details

The sudden reversal comes shortly after Marvel Studios celebrated a successful theatrical release for Spider-Man Brand New Day. However, the decision to axe Wonder Man caused frustration for co-creator and showrunner Andrew Guest, who took to TikTok to address fans and clarify the circumstances surrounding the show's demise.

Guest denied widespread speculation that the cancellation stemmed from scheduling conflicts with director Destin Daniel Cretton or members of the acting ensemble. He also dismissed rumors that Disney was pulling the project as part of a strategic marketing plan for an unannounced feature film.

In a series of videos posted to TikTok, Guest stated that no movie adaptation was currently in production and affirmed that neither Cretton's schedule nor anyone else's calendar had presented an obstacle. He confirmed that he, Abdul-Mateen, Cretton, and co-star Sir Ben Kingsley were all eager to continue the story, noting that talent contracts had already been signed and production schedules cleared.

Pre-production plans for the second season were already at an advanced stage prior to the shutdown. Guest revealed that the writers' room was scheduled to begin developing scripts this month, with principal photography slated to commence in early 2027. Despite that momentum, Disney and Marvel made an internal determination that proceeding with the series was no longer in their best interest, a shift Guest acknowledged he could not fully explain beyond internal corporate policy.

Background on the production

Wonder Man was developed under the Marvel Television banner as an expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney+. The series starred Abdul-Mateen, an Emmy Award-winning actor known for his roles in Watchmen and Aquaman, as Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who gains superhuman powers. The cast also featured veteran actor Kingsley, who reprised his role as Trevor Slattery from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, alongside Cretton, who directed that 2021 film.

Disney considers free tier model

As Marvel reassesses its streaming output, Disney Chief Executive Officer Josh D'Amaro confirmed that the company is actively exploring a free tier for Disney+ in an effort to expand user growth. D'Amaro acknowledged recent industry rumors, stating that leadership is studying options to introduce unpaid access to attract new subscribers.

Disney+ holds a major competitive advantage in the streaming landscape due to its extensive catalog, which encompasses properties from Marvel Studios, Star Wars, 20th Century Studios, Disney Animation, and Pixar. While D'Amaro noted that no firm launch date or finalized proposal has been set, Disney is evaluating several distribution models to offer partial content access without requiring a paid subscription.

One proposal gaining traction within the company is the integration of FAST, or Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television, channels directly into the Disney+ app. The ad-supported model, which has already been adopted by rival platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, would offer viewers a curated selection of rotating movies, television series, and premiere episodes in exchange for watching commercial advertisements. A similar strategy was recently implemented by Spanish operator Movistar Plus.

Platform growth and TikTok partnership

Company executives view the potential free tier as a primary acquisition vehicle designed to introduce non-subscribers to the service before converting them into paying customers.

Alongside potential streaming modifications, Disney has established a new commercial partnership with social media platform TikTok. The collaboration will allow content creators to feature characters and intellectual property from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and Disney in their short-form videos. The initiative is launching as a pilot program in the United States, with plans for a potential global rollout if the initial test proves successful.
