Steve McBee Sr, the patriarch of Bravo's The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys, has been released from federal prison and reunited with his family after serving less than a year of an original two-year sentence for federal crop insurance fraud.
The 53-year-old father of four walked out of a federal prison camp in Yankton, South Dakota, on Friday and returned to the family farm in Gallatin, Missouri.
He marked the moment by posting his first Instagram reel since his release, showing green rolling hills, trees and a pond on the farm, set to the soundtrack of John Denver's classic "Take Me Home Country Roads."
His son Cole, the third-born of McBee's four sons with his ex-wife Kristi, shared a photo on Instagram of McBee meeting his new granddaughter for the first time. McBee appeared noticeably thinner in the image. "So blessed to have the family back together. Dad and Tate have officially got to meet now," Cole wrote alongside a red heart emoji.
McBee's namesake, Steven Jr, echoed the sentiment with his own Instagram video of the family reunion, captioned simply, "life is good."
Who is Steve McBee Sr?
McBee is a prominent Missouri farmer and owner of McBee Farming Operations. He has starred on the Bravo reality series The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys alongside his four sons, Steven Jr, Jesse, Cole and Brayden, since the show premiered in March 2024.
The crop insurance fraud case
McBee pleaded guilty to federal crop insurance fraud in November 2024 after admitting he underreported crop yields and submitted false information to Rain and Hail, a company reinsured by the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation, between 2018 and 2020.
He had claimed his farming operations produced only 340,476 bushels of corn and 190,171 bushels of soybeans in 2018. In reality, the operation sold more than 1.2 million bushels of corn and nearly 416,000 bushels of soybeans that year.
McBee was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison, to be followed by two years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay more than $4 million to the United States Department of Agriculture.
Home confinement ahead
McBee is now expected to serve four to six months under home confinement, according to People. After that, he must complete a two-year period of supervised release.
Sons speak on podcast
Speaking on the Roxanne and Shantel podcast on August 24, Steven Jr said he was looking forward to having his father back in his life and in the family's businesses following the release.
"We cannot wait to have him back here," he said. "I think prison and that time to do nothing or just read and reflect is going to be the best thing that ever happened."
Steven Jr also said his father had been changed by the experience. "I hope that the way he talks now, the way he acts now, and the things he says, I hope they stick whenever he gets out of prison. And if so, I think there's a lot of good things to come," he said.
Show's future uncertain
Season three of The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys concluded in August. As of early September, Bravo had not officially renewed the series for a fourth season.
