Actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson has announced he is working on a television miniseries about the Great Siege of Malta of 1565, one of the most dramatic military and religious episodes in European history. The project will portray the resistance of the Knights of St. John and the people of Malta against a prolonged Ottoman siege.
According to Gibson, the production will dramatize how a small force of roughly 700 Christian knights faced down some 40,000 fighters sent by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, achieving a victory that is widely credited with helping preserve Christian Europe from Ottoman advance. Gibson said the defenders held to their faith and to the intercession of the Virgin Mary throughout the siege, and that their story shows how courage and religious conviction can overcome even the most overwhelming odds.
Knights of St. John and the 1565 siege
The Knights of St. John, also known as the Knights Hospitaller, were a Catholic military order that had been based on Malta since 1530 after being driven from Rhodes by the Ottomans. In 1565, Suleiman the Magnificent, the longest-reigning sultan of the Ottoman Empire, dispatched a massive invasion force to seize the island and eliminate the order as a threat to Ottoman shipping in the Mediterranean. The knights and Maltese civilians withstood months of bombardment and assault before the Ottoman forces withdrew, a result later seen as a turning point that blunted Ottoman expansion into Western Europe.
Gibson described the forthcoming series as a tribute to bravery, sacrifice and what he called an unbreakable defense of the faith. He said it is meant to remind new generations of the legacy of the men who died defending the Church and its sacred roots.
Gibson's history with faith-based epics
The Malta project fits a pattern that has defined much of Gibson's career behind the camera. He won the Academy Award for best director for the 1995 medieval epic "Braveheart," and later wrote and directed "The Passion of the Christ," a 2004 film about the final hours of Jesus Christ that became one of the highest-grossing independent films ever released. His work has repeatedly returned to stories of faith, sacrifice and resistance against overwhelming force, themes that recur in the planned Malta miniseries.
Sequel to The Passion of the Christ
Separately from the Malta project, Gibson is preparing the release of his long-awaited sequel to "The Passion of the Christ," titled "The Resurrection of the Christ: Part 1." The first installment is scheduled to reach theaters in May 2027, with a second part set to premiere on May 25, 2028.
