The Dell survey highlights the priorities of young people from Brazil and other countries in a post-pandemic and climate change scenario
The youth of Generation Zborn between 1996 and 2010, expect government to focus on areas of Health, education and in expenses ecological in the post-pandemic economic recovery, highlighted a survey conducted by the technology company ofespecially among Brazilians.
When asked about three areas that should be prioritized, 64% of Brazilians included health and 57% education; in third place the circular economy to reduce waste (50%). All were above the world average (46%, 34%, and 39%, respectively). Other actions highly appreciated by Brazilians were investing in renewable energy (47%) and guaranteeing more sustainable public transport (40%).
“The rulers do not pass on to this generation that has the vision of the future that they must project”, comments Assaf. The speech is corroborated by another survey by Dell, “IT Investment Trends for Government Sector in Brazil”, which revealed that 70% of top public administration positions in the country do not have an agenda to continue the digital transformation of management through the use of technology and innovation.
Thus, low usage of technology decreases trust in public actors. “Young people see technology with all the potential it has, they use apps and social networks, then they take the bus and don’t know when it’s coming and when it’s leaving, they have to go to doctor’s appointments in person and go get their medicine, not he has resources at school”, quotes the director of the company that carried out the research.
The expectation is that governments will be able to create truly smart and connected cities to qualify citizens’ lives with data intelligence. An example would be the substitution of medicines in the public sector while preventing waste and shortages, classroom use by teachers or information on bus timetables. For this, governments need to put technology on the agenda and notice how much votes they can gain if they do so, as well as enlist the help of companies.
Economy x Environment
The poll also showed that 37% of young people would agree to forego short-term economic growth if the government committed to a long-term investment strategy focused on sustainable stocks. It also showed that 62% said energy supplies should come from clean, renewable sources, while 36% believed energy should be cheap, regardless of what source or how green it is.
Despite the good will of part of generation Z, economic growth and environmental protection are perfectly compatible – a new ‘bioeconomy’, with technology as an ally, new financial instruments and which is both ecologically and socially correct is the attempt. The growth of renewable energy is an example of this, as it becomes cheaper as it grows, and the use of data helps prevent diversions, waste and losses.
