Superhero movies saturated? James Gunn responds

James Gunn directed the three Guardians of the Galaxy films and is the new head of DC in cinemas, series and animations

With the various criticisms that films and series from the marvel cinematic universe (MCU) have received in recent years, in addition to the box office failure of black adam (2022), Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) and Shazam! Gods Fury (2023), the discussion arose that the superhero genre is saturated.

During an interview with Rolling Stone USA, James Gunndirector of the films Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad (2021) and Peacemaker, was honest about this thread — and opined how it actually exists. It is worth remembering how the filmmaker commands, alongside Peter SafranO dc universe (DCU) in cinemas, series and animations.

“I think there’s such a thing as superhero fatigue. I don’t think it has anything to do with superheroes. It has to do with the type of stories that are being told, and if you lose your eye on the ball, which is the character ,” stated Gunn. “We love Superman. We love batman. We love Iron Man.”

“Because they’re these amazing characters that we hold in our hearts. And if it becomes just a bunch of silliness on screen, it gets really boring,” continued the writer-director. “But I get tired of most spectacle films, the routine of not having an emotionally grounded story.”

It has nothing to do with whether they are superhero movies or not.

“If you don’t have a story at the bottom, just watching it all collide, no matter how clever those hard-hitting moments are, no matter how clever the designs and the visual effects are, it becomes tiresome, and I think that’s very , very real,” concluded James Gunn.
