Associated with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Don Simpson manages to convince a certain Eddie Murphy to play the title role. Known as a comedian, the latter started his film career on a high note Beverly Hills CopReleased in 1984, it was a box office hit ($316 million worldwide on a $15 million budget) and catapulted him to international stardom.

If Paramount Studios plans to create a spin-off series, Eddie Murphy insists on continuing the film. Producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer then hired Tony Scott to direct, thanks to their huge and recent success together: Top Gun.

In this way, the film director Martin Brest is made to direct the new adventure of Axel Foley, which sees the light of day in 1987. The coolest cop on the planet is back in Beverly Hills to assist his colleagues in a jewelry heist.

More punchy than its predecessor, Beverly Hills Cop 2 offers stunning action sequences, including a tanker chase and an impressive final attack. Eddie Murphy in turn delivers an even stronger performance from which we retain great lines such as “Policemen are like pigs, they smell from afar!” or “Are the brakes working? I don’t know, I haven’t tried it yet”.
