Lufthansa says ITA talks ‘on track’

The deadline for negotiations with the Italian government expires on 5/12

Lufthansa chief executive Carsten Spohr said on Tuesday (2) that negotiations with the Italian government to acquire a stake in ITA Airways were on a “good track”.

The statement comes amid delayed talks between the two sides, who agreed to extend the deadline for the deal from April 24 to May 12.

“The quality of our network and the breadth of our offer would not be imaginable without the multitude of our airlines and brands,” Spohr said, according to German website FinanzNachrichten.

“As a sign of further progress on this strategy, our talks with the Italian government for a stake in ITA are on track,” he added.

Lufthansa aims to acquire 40% of ITA for between 250 and 300 million euros and transform Fiumicino airport, just outside Rome, into the group’s hub for Latin America and Africa.

With 100% state capital, ITA was born in 2021 to replace Alitalia, extinct after successive financial crises, and the government would maintain share control even with the possible entry of Lufthansa, which would take care of the operational part of the airline.
