Skin: Are movies really getting longer and longer?

Before the release of Leila and her brothers and Suffering on the Islands, Cannes’s longest-running 2022 film, AlloCiné has collected 10 years of data on the films in the competition. Are we moving towards a movie length record? We collect supplies.

This is a theme that often brings to life the conversations of festival-goers, especially as the festival draws to a close and the accumulated fatigue associated with it: Can the competition films in Cannes grow longer and longer from year to year?

2022, a record year? The answer is no! According to the data compiled in the AlloCiné database, the 2022 edition does not break the length record, but is very close to the record set in 2016 and 2000!

The 75th edition of the festival is in a really high length range. The average length of films this year is 124 minutes, which is one minute behind the festival all-time record. He stands for 125 minutes. This record was reached twice: in 2016 and in 2000. It should be noted that the average length of films in 2009, 1981 and 1978 was also 124 minutes.

Our schedule that summarizes the length of records by issue-by-issue.

This year, the two longest films of the 2nd week of the festival will be aired, in this case Said Rustaei Leïla et ses frères and Albert Serra Tourment sur les îles with a duration of 165 minutes. This is not a record of duration yet.

You must return in 2019 to find the longest film in the festival’s recent history: Mektoub My Love: Intermezzo by Abdelatif Kechiche in 212 minutes. Recall that this film did not come out after showing the skin in cinemas, which caused a lot of reactions.
