During the New Yorker Live event, Tom Hanks said he didn’t think “Forrest Gump” would be a hit.
In conversation with New Yorker magazine editor David Remnick, the actor recalled a conversation he had with “Forrest Gump” director Robert Zemeckis.
Will anyone be interested in this film? This guy sitting on this thing in these silly shoes and this peek-a-boo suit with a suitcase full of Curious George books and stuff. Are we doing anything here that makes sense to anyone?

The director replied that it was indeed a risky film:
He told me, ‘It’s a minefield, Tom. A goddamn minefield. We may be sowing the seeds of our own destruction. Every wrong step can cause a catastrophe.’

Last year, the actor said he made just four films that he considers “very good,” but didn’t specify which ones they would be.
I’ve done a bunch of movies — and four of them are pretty good, I think — and I’m still amazed at how the movies fit together. From the flash of an idea to the flickering image on the screen, the whole process is a miracle.
