Can Super Mario Bros become the biggest animated hit of all time?

In theaters since April 5, Super Mario Bros., the animated adaptation of Nintendo’s popular video game, recently surpassed the scores of Minions, making it Illumination Studios’ biggest hit.

A performance that recently earned him Disney CEO Bob Iger: Let me digress and congratulate Universal on the phenomenal success of Super Mario Bros.said the latter during a conference call about the company’s earnings.

“It really proves that people all over the world love to be entertained by movies, and it gives us reason to be optimistic about the film industry.”

With $1.165 billion worldwide, Super Mario Bros. is already the biggest blockbuster of 2023. But could it become the biggest animated film of all time? To achieve this result, he will still have to overcome four main competitors, all from the Disney team.

Indeed, ahead of Super Mario at the box office always animation, we find:

  • The Incredibles 2 ($1.243 billion)
  • Frozen (1.284 billion)
  • Frozen 2 (1.453 billion)
  • And finally The Lion King, 2019 version (1.663 billion)

This latest feature film – photorealistic but done entirely in computer graphics, except for the foreground – is still debated as to whether or not it should be officially considered an animated film, which it technically is.

To surpass it, Mario still needs to collect 498 million coins (or 288 million for Frozen 2). A goal that certainly seems very ambitious, but the mustachioed plumber may continue to amaze us.
