Analysis: RB Bragantino’s ‘magic’ prevents cumbersome but ineffective Palmeiras from winning

By Philip Leite

A few days ago, when asked about the adverse defensive moment that Palmeiras was going through, Abel Ferreira rejected any kind of concern. The Portuguese said he was more ‘perplexed’ by Verdão’s offensive inefficiency, “who had to score a goal for every two chances created”.

This ineffectiveness was felt on Saturday evening (13), in the draw between Alviverde and RB Bragantino, at the Allianz Parque, for the 6th round of Serie A in the Brazilian championship. Artur said it well: the 1-1 was right and reflected well what happened during the match.

As (almost) always, Palmeiras dictated the pace of the game and controlled the offensive actions. Unlike what happened against Grêmio, however, the Palestinian team failed to translate its undeniable attack volume into goals. And, also unlike Grêmio himself, RB Bragantino threatened Weverton’s goal.

Not with the same ‘weight’ as Verdão, it’s true, but when Massa Bruta arrived he arrived well. Proof of this are the opportunities wasted by Eric Ramires and Eduardo Sasha, for example. In organized fashion, RB Bragantino responded at the climax with rarer but powerful attacking arrivals.

However, there are some elements that upset the balance of football. We can cite two as an example: the ‘law of the ex’ and magic. After all, they both graced the chilly night at Allianz Parque.

19 minutes into the second half, Raphael Veiga took a corner kick, Gustavo Gómez deflected it and Artur seemed to complete, with a header, into the back of the net. ‘Law of the Ex’ sanctioned with success and much celebration for the number 14, who scored his first goal for Palmeiras at home in Palestine.

Only you don’t play with magic. Abel Ferreira defined it well in the press conference after the duel: Juninho Capixaba’s magic goal. In the 25th minute the left winger receives a pass from Lucas Evangelista and hits a bomb from outside the box. Ball for a corner, no chance for Weverton to defend: 1 to 1.

In the end it’s a good size. If Palmeiras has won one point or lost two, the end of the Brasileirão will tell. For now, it remains to underline that the different strategies deserved to be rewarded at Allianz Parque: the home team, for the volume of play, and the guests, for their efficiency.
