Martin Scorsese announces a new film about Jesus at the request of Pope Francis

Famous director Martin Scorsese, of the films “Goodfellas” (1990) and “Taxi Driver” (1976), has revealed plans to make a new film about Jesus Christ. After attending the Cannes Film Festival last week for the premiere of his latest work, “Assassins of the Moon of Flowers”, the director left for Italy, where he had a meeting with Pope Francis.

During the conference “The global aesthetics of the Catholic imagination”, held in Rome last Saturday (27/5), the director said he had decided to respond to an appeal from the Pope. “I answered the pope’s call in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a script for a film about Jesus Christ,” he said. “I’m about to start.”

Prior to attending the event, Scorsese had the opportunity to meet Pope Francis in a private audience with his wife, Helen, at the Vatican. According to editor Antonio Spadaro, of Variety, the conversation between the two was an exchange of references on films, where the director was apparently moved by the Pope’s appeal to “show us Jesus”.

It is worth mentioning that Scorsese previously directed a film about Jesus, “The Last Temptation of Christ” (1988), with actor Willem Dafoe in the lead role, which caused controversy in the Catholic Church for showing a delusion of Jesus , in which he rejects God’s plan to sacrifice. But the outcome of the work was biblical.

The director also drew inspiration from religion to film “Silence” (2016), which dealt with the repression of Christian Jesuits in Japan. He also made a Buddhist film, “Kundun” (1997), which depicts the life of the Dalai Lama.

As plans for the director’s next film take shape, “Assassins of the Moon of Flowers” is already fueling expectations among moviegoers, following a much-lauded premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio (“Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood”), Lily Gladstone (“Certain Women”), Robert De Niro (“The Irishman”) and other famous artists, the film is set in the US state of Oklahoma , in 1920. and depicts the massacre of an indigenous tribe by businessmen greedy for oil found on their land.

With a 96% approval rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website, the Apple-produced feature film opens in Brazilian theaters on October 19, before landing on the Apple TV+ platform.
