The In-Edit Festival switches from Elis Regina to Rita Lee in its 15th edition

In-Edit, the International Music Documentary Festival, is now in its 15th edition. The event brings together a selection of national and international films, which will be available in cinemas in São Paulo and also online until 25 June.

Bringing together feature and short films, the documentary festival presents more than 60 titles, which include new films and classic productions. Artists such as Tom Jobim, Elis Regina, Rita Lee and even Michael Jackson are among the personalities portrayed in the works.

The face-to-face sessions take place in the city of São Paulo in the halls of CineSesc, Cinemateca Brasileira, Spcine Olido, Spcine Paulo Emílio (CCSP) and Cine Cortina. Access to exhibitions is free, with the exception of CineSesc, with tickets starting at R$8. For free entry to face-to-face sessions, tickets must be collected at the box office one hour before the start of each session .

As part of its programming, the titles will be available for free and on-demand (on demand) on four streaming services, namely Sesc Digital, Itaú Cultural Play, Spcine Play and In-Edit Brasil TV.

In addition to film screenings, the festival also offers a range of exclusive content with a cultural focus. This includes interviews with directors, tributes, a vinyl record fair and live concerts.

The documentary about Elis Regina competes for the main prize

Like other film festivals, In-Edit also has a competition, defined by a jury. Among the films in competition this year, the documentary “Elis & Tom, It Just Had to Be with You” stands out.

Directed by Roberto de Oliveira and Jom Tob Azulay, the production shows the backstage of the recording of “Elis & Tom”, the historic album by Elis Regina and Tom Jobim released in 1974. The 1h20min feature features never-before-seen footage from a 16mm camera, which they have been restored to 4K.

The competition also includes “Famoudou Konaté – The King of Djembe”, “Fausto Fawcett na Cabeça”, “Frevo Michiles”, “Miúcha, a Voz da Bossa Nova”, “Peixe Abissal”, “Terruá Pará” and “Villa-Lobos in Paris”.

From Pink Floyd to the Backstreet Boys

Among the international highlights, the documentary ‘Sonic Fantasy’, by Spanish director Saúl Benejama, will show the story behind the recording of ‘Thriller’, the singer’s album that impacted not only pop music, but the whole music industry.

The lineup also includes “Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd.” Directed by Roddy Bogawa and Storm Thorgerson, the production tells the story of musician Syd Barrett, founder of the iconic rock band Pink Floyd, who ended up in a mental institution.

Fans of the American band Backstreet Boys will be able to admire the documentary “Backstreet Boys: Show ’em what you’re made of”, by director Stephen Kijak. The project covers from childhood to adulthood of the group members, which was a teenage phenomenon in the 90s. Through thick and thin, they continue together to this day – and they performed shows in Brazil in January this year .

And rap is not missing, with a film on rapper XXXTENTACION, murdered in 2018. The documentary “Look At Me: XXXTENTACION” is directed by Sabaah Folayan and will show the tumultuous life of the artist accused of several crimes before his death .

Different styles around the world

Despite the productions’ emphasis on pop music artists, the festival is also an opportunity for the public to discover new sounds and stories. Among them is director Álvaro Luque’s “La danza de Los Mirlos,” which features a band playing Amazonian psychedelic cumbia from Peru.

Another is “Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes,” directed by Samuel Pollard and Ben Shapiro, a biography of the legendary jazz drummer that explores his personal and political struggles as well as the legacy he left behind.

Tribute to Rita Lee closes the festival

To close the vast program, In-Edit pays tribute to Rita Lee, who passed away last month, with the screening of the documentary “Ovelha Negra”, from 2007. The 79-minute feature film was directed by Roberto de Oliveira and tells the story of rocker, going through his childhood, family, school, Os Mutantes, Tropicalismo and his collaboration with the band Tutti Frutti.

The screening will close the festival on June 25 in a special session at the Cinemateca Brasileira.

It is worth mentioning that, in addition to the film screenings, the festival also offers a series of parallel activities, which take place in various parts of the city of São Paulo. Events and fairs, but also timetables and cinemas can be checked in detail in the schedule on the official website: https://br.in-edit.org.
