“I had to give Walt Disney $4,000”: This actress had to pay to get the role she wanted in Mary Poppins!

Fun and bubbly, sometimes a street artist, sometimes a chimney sweep and sometimes a one-man band, Bertie is undoubtedly one of Mary Poppins’ most beloved characters. As evil as the children in her care, the loyal friend of the governess, played by Julie Andrews, is masterfully played by actor Dick Van Dyck.

However, even if some people don’t know it, Bertie is not the only Walt Disney movie character that the actor has portrayed. Indeed, it is difficult to recognize when one does not know, but Dick Van Dyck also hides behind the wrinkles and white hair of the old banker Mr. Dawes, who tries to steal his savings from the young Michael.

To get the second role in the film, Bert’s translator also had to strongly insist on Walt Disney and even … pay!

As incredible as it may seem, as the now 97-year-old actor revealed, the famously bewitching studio boss only agreed to give him the role in exchange for a certain amount of money.

“I said I’d do it for free”said Dick Van Dyk on the show in 2018 Mary Poppins Returns: Behind the Magic – Special Edition of 20/20has been conveyed HollywoodReporter. “In the end, I had to pay $4,000 to get the part. (…) And I would do it again.”

In the end, Van Dyck inherits two characters that he perfectly portrays and who never meet during the course of the film.

54 years after he transferred his properties to the old banker, when he learned that a follow-up project was in the works, he again asked to integrate the adventure, this time to interpret Mr. Dow’s son in the wonderful Mary Poppins Returns. Now in her nineties, she still performed an impressive dance number at the end of the feature film.
