Dua Lipa returns with “Houdini” after a three-year false disappearance

After a three and a half year wait since the release of “Future Nostalgia”, Dua Lipa presented her new sound with the release of the video for “Houdini”, the first single from her third album. And it’s more disco, with a synthetic early ’80s sound, in the best ABBA style.

Although it’s been a long time since her last album, Dua Lipa has done everything but disappear during this period, recording with Elton John, Megan Thee Stallion, Calvin Harris and even starring in the movie “Barbie.” However, his new song is about disappearance, in a direct reference to the Hungarian-American illusionist Harry Houdini, famous for his acts of escape in the early 20th century.

The song is produced by Kevin Parker, of Tame Impala, and the clip directed by Manu Cossu (known for his work with the French band M83) shows Dua Lipa in a dance studio, establishing visual parallels with a famous scene from the film ” Outro The New Cinderella Story” (2008), with Selena Gomez. Lipa, known for her keen eye for fashion, wears a Dion Lee mesh corset, Martine Rose track pants and Puma trainers.

The lyrics “I appear and disappear, take me or kill Houdini” evokes Houdini’s ability to deceive the audience and free himself from restrictions and handcuffs, and is evoked in the staging, which uses studio mirrors to create illusions, alternating scenes of singer who dances alone and, when reflected in the mirror, accompanied by several dancers.
