Long before Yellowstone, the story begins on a ranch in Montana and the surrounding wilderness. Their father, Colonel Williams Ludlow (played by Anthony Hopkins), raised three brothers: Alfred, the elder, Samuel, the younger, and Tristan, the middle one, who spends most of his time hunting in the woods. Indian customs.
When Samuel introduces his bride Susanna to his two older brothers, they are immediately seduced by the young woman. When the First World War broke out, three of Ludlow’s sons were sent to the front and Samuel was tragically killed by enemy soldiers, despite the promise of his brothers who had sworn to protect him. Back in Montana, a bitter rivalry develops between Tristan and Alfred, both of whom are in love with Susanna.
- Tonight on Netflix: The best Tarantino movie you’ll see on the platform is it!
It’s hard not to think of a certain sequence from Inglourious Basterds when we see Brad Pitt (15 years earlier) scalping soldiers to avenge his brother’s death in battle. However, this is the only common point we can find between Tarantino’s film and Legends of the Fall, two films that do not depict the same world war.
Directed in 1995 by Edward Zwick, to whom we also owe The Last Samurai, this tragic and romantic mural, set to one of James Horner’s most beautiful soundtracks, takes place over several decades.
With sumptuous cinematography that also won an Oscar, Legends of the Fall is a true invitation to escapism, especially thanks to Tristan’s irrepressible character. As Brad Pitt, he never stops traversing the vast expanses of Montana, motivated by the fierce freedom he shares with viewers to get them off the couch.
Edward Zwick’s feature film, which constantly breathes romantic air, is a classic work, of course, but completely exotic. A tragic family epic where siblings fall apart amid war and rivalry, we recommend (re)discovering it on Netflix if you want to forget about your everyday life for more than two hours.
Fun fact, the grizzly bear that Tristan meets at the beginning of the film isn’t just any animal: named Bart, he’s actually the same bear as Jean-Jacques Annas, who also appeared in White Fang and Knives Out.
