Flying cars conduct first tests in New York; watch the video

Joby Aviation carried out the first test on Sunday (12th) and Volocopter completed the first test on Monday (13th)

The company Joby Aviation successfully carried out the first flight VTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles), popularly called Flying cars.

The first tests took place in New York City on Sunday (12th), marking a significant advance in the ongoing technological race between several companies to bring this means of transportation to life.

A feature of these electric vehicles is its operation without aviation kerosene, commonly used by helicopters. This is essential not only for a change in the reduction of polluting gas emissions, but also promises quieter flights, thanks to electric propulsion.

The Joby Aviation plane has the capacity to carry four passengers and a pilot, with a maximum speed of 320 km/h.

Founder Joeben Bevirt pointed out that a flight from New York to JFK, which would normally require an hour’s drive during rush hour, could be completed in just 7 minutes using this technology.

Planning to begin its first commercial flights in 2025, Joby Aviation has already obtained authorization for test flights in the United States and has identified a strategic partnership with Delta Airlines to provide air taxi services using these new aircraft in New York City.

In turn, the Volocopter, with capacity for one passenger and one pilot, with a maximum speed of 110 km/h.

While awaiting certification for commercial flights in the USA and Europe, the company, through a press release, expressed its vision on how eVTOLs, known as VoloCity, can improve the quality of life in cities.

The test of the aircraft took place on Monday (13).

These two flights took off from a helipad in midtown Manhattan and had the honor of being witnessed by New York Mayor Eric Adams.

Adams commented on the tests, highlighting the noise reduction potential of aircraft and their influence on improving urban life.

In addition to Joby Aviation and Volocopter, other companies, such as Eva, integrated into Embraer, are also investing in the development of these “Flying cars”.

Eva plans to operate commercial flights in 2026 and already transport 12 million passengers in the cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro by 2035, thus contributing to the evolution of urban air transport.

The demonstration of these promising technologies marks a new era of air mobility in cities, offering exciting and transformative prospects for the future of urban transport and the aviation industry.
