This is the wonderful comedy Les Petites Victories, a funny, sensitive and exciting film directed by the duo of Michel Blanc and Julia Piaton. A little nugget that does well and has drawn nearly a million viewers to French theaters.
Growing up in a small town, director Melanie Offret wanted to awaken the countryside and the phenomenon of rural desertification with Les Petites Victoires. “The peculiarity of the desert phenomenon is that it causes another“, he notes.
“Population flight to big cities leads not only to loss of activity, but also to loss of social connections. First of all, it is businesses that close and move away, fun places become rarer, access to first aid. Locked down, then schools that close…”
Despite the serious themes (rural desertification and illiteracy), Les Petites Victoires is a comedy. The director emphasizes: “However, it was important for me to stay within the codes of cinema, which I love, namely comedy, where the subject matter, obviously light, still allows us to think. Because the film is based on positive characters and also emphasizes doing things together.”
It was this combination that attracted Michel Blanc. “To balance the deep and raw side of the reality of illiteracy, we witness a grown man parachute into a class of six- to nine-year-olds who are, for the most part, more advanced than he in learning to read.”– says the actor. “That contrast is definitely a source of comedy and I enjoyed playing with the kids.”
Tonight on Canal+ at 9 o’clock.
