20 years ago, Mel Gibson surprised the world with the premiere of the shocking film “The Passion of the Christ”. This independent project, financed with $45 million of his own assets after the major studios rejected his idea, became a box office phenomenon. The cruelty with which it depicted the events surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus not only sparked controversy, but also set a precedent in religious cinema. So much so that, for decades, many wondered if there would be a second part.
Will “The Passion of the Christ” have a second part?
In 2016, the director revealed in an interview with Stephen Colbert that he was working on the script for ‘The Passion of the Christ 2’.
Although, on this occasion, he emphasized that “it will probably be 3 years” to achieve the film “because it is a great subject” that they intend to deal with.
What will “The Passion of the Christ 2” do? The film could be controversial
In multiple interviews, both Gibson and Jim Caviezel, the actor who played Jesus in the popular film, have commented that the sequel will be titled “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection.”
In this sense, the story will focus on the events after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, what happened in the three days between his death and his resurrection?
The 2004 film The Passion of the Christ has already caused controversy for basing some of its scenes on the visions of Catholic visionaries such as María de Jesús de Ágreda and Ana Catalina Emmerich. The latter has a story called “The Ripper of Hell” in which he says that, after his crucifixion, Jesus descended into hell, broke down its walls, fought with Satan and freed souls from pain.
This anecdote is barely mentioned in a few passages of the Bible, which is why it has been discussed among Christians.
Moreover, focusing on it could alienate some viewers, especially evangelicals, who have strongly supported the first installment.
In April 2024, Mel Gibson revealed to Outstanding Screenplays that he has two scripts for The Passion of the Christ 2: “One of them is very structured and very strong, and pretty much what you’d expect, and the other is like an acid trip, because you go to other realms and stuff. “I mean, you’re in hell and you see angels falling.”
For his part, Jim Caviezel has announced that it won’t be one movie, but rather “two or three.”
It is worth noting that, so far, there are no dates for the recording of ‘The Passion of the Christ 2’.
The possible cast of “The Passion of the Christ 2”
So far, only Jim Caviezel has been confirmed to reprise his role as Jesus Christ.
Various rumors state that Maia Morgenstern, Francesco De Vito and Christo Jikov would also return as María, Pedro and Juan respectively.
Where to see “The Passion of the Christ”?
While plans for the sequel are being finalized, those who want to watch the Christian film can find it on the Star+ streaming service.
