“Maze Runner,” a hit on Netflix

In 2014, the science fiction and adventure film “Maze Runner: Run or Die” was released, based on the novel of the same name by James Dashner.

The story follows Thomas, a young man who wakes up in an elevator with no memory of who he is or how he got there. When he reaches his destination, Thomas finds himself in the Glade, a vast space surrounded by tall, mysterious walls.

The Glade is home to a group of young people called Runners, who have been abandoned there and have been forced to survive on their own. Each month, a new boy arrives at the Glade via the elevator, and the Runners must find a way to escape the maze that surrounds the space before the elevator closes and they are trapped forever.

After the success, the franchise released two more films: ‘Maze Runner: Trial by Fire’ (2015) and ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ (2018).

The Hunger Games (2012)

Following the success of the film adaptations of ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Twilight’, in 2012, Lionsgate studio presented ‘The Hunger Games’, a story set in a post-apocalyptic world where a group of teenagers from different locations are forced to to fight to the death in a televised event.

Jennifer Lawrence played Katniss, a teenager who takes her sister’s place in these “games”, sparking one of the most popular movie franchises.

“Divergent” (2014)

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Veronica Roth. The plot takes place in a dystopian future where society is divided into five factions based on human virtues: Renunciation (altruism), Honesty (honesty), Friendship (faith), Courage (bravery) and Intelligence (intelligence).

The story follows Beatrice “Tris” Prior (Shailene Woodley), a teenage girl who lives in the Abnegation faction with her family. However, Tris discovers that she is a deviant, a person who does not fit into a faction and who has unique abilities that make her dangerous to the established system.

In addition to Shailene Woodley, this film stars Theo James, Jai Courtney, Ashley Judd, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz and Kate Winslet. The sequels failed to have the same success, which disappointed fans.

“The Giver” (2014)

Known in Latin America as “The Giver of Memories”, it tells the story of Jonas, who lives in a dystopian society where there are no memories or emotions. When he is chosen to be the Giver of Memory, he discovers the truth about the past.

Jeff Bridges, Brenton Thwaites, Odeya Rush, Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgård, Katie Holmes and Cameron Monaghan starred in this story.

‘Ender’s Game’ (2013)

The film is based on the science fiction novel of the same name written by Orson Scott Card. The plot centers on a young prodigy named Ender Wiggin, who is recruited by the International Fleet to train at a military space school known as Battle School.

In a dystopian future, humanity faces an alien threat called the Formics and seeks a strategic leader capable of leading the defense against this invasion. Ender, a smart and strategic boy, is selected for rigorous training at Battle School, where he faces physical and mental challenges to become the ultimate commander.

‘Ready Player One’ (2018)

In the year 2044, Earth is devastated and most people find escape and relief in the OASIS, an online multiplayer game with thousands of different locations where they have an avatar that offers an escape from the real world.

OASIS creator James Halliday has left a contest that will transfer ownership of said company to whoever finds its Easter egg. Since the company is worth billions of dollars, many users are trying to decipher the clues to get it, but it won’t be easy.
