Princess: Forget her in fairy tales… now she’s breaking arms on Disney+!

New to Disney+, the movie with Princess Joy King takes a muscular approach to the fairy tale princess myth that Disney helped popularize…

What is it about?

When a beautiful princess with a strong character refuses to marry the cruel sociopath to whom she is betrothed, her father, driven mad with rage, is kidnapped and locked in an isolated castle tower. Faced with a vengeful and despicable suitor bent on usurping his father’s throne, he will have to find radical solutions not only to protect his family and himself, but to save the entire kingdom…

The Princess, directed by Le-Van Kiet, written by Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton with Joey King, Dominic Cooper, Olga Kurylenko and Veronica Ngo.

Disney Princess 2.0

On the face of it, it’s pretty disturbing to see the myth of the fairy tale princess that Disney has been promoting for decades turn into an actual killing machine. Because it really is The Princess’s Field, a pure action movie that Joey King wears a thousand leagues from his role as a lovelorn teenager in The Kissing Booth or as a child victim and then executioner in The Act.

The tone is set from the first minutes. The titular princess is locked atop a prison tower, her parents are imprisoned, and she is soon forced to marry a psychopath (Dominic Cooper) and a power-hungry prince.

This movie came to me out of the blue when I was in post-production on The Ancestral in Vietnam. I thought it was a joke when the Disney studio contacted me and they had the wrong director– says the director of the film Le-Van Kiet. However, it was neither a mistake nor a joke.

I was immediately interested in making a film that is not historically and completely realistic, but primarily an action film with an evil princess and full of surprises. And indeed, the film is very distinct from any historical reference. But in his shots and costumes and even the archetype of the other main characters, he takes on the codes of the Disney fairy tale films. With a good dose of brutality. addition.

Joy King is a princess

I love all the 80’s action movies as well as a lot of the martial arts movies I grew up with. I love The Raid and Die Hard. Here, too, there is the same dynamic with the heroine and her obstacle“Continues the director. The dynamics of the film are very clear from the beginning: a prisoner at the top of her tower, the princess must reach the first floor, beat several dozen opponents on the way and meet the last boss after the meeting. At the bottom.

A sort of guilty pleasure, fully embraced by its director. “That was the goal of this movie, to be a moment of relaxation and total enjoyment for the audience, without any feminist or other message. However, of course, this film takes place at a time when we see more and more strong female characters in cinema.”

Joey King is stunning in this role, where we’re more used to seeing role models like Michelle Rodriguez or Charlize Theron. It is also surprising because we find it in a rather raw genre. He is seen carrying swords in skulls and kneeling. All without blinking.

Without the philosophical and geopolitical dimension of Game of Thrones, we can only guess at the influence of the HBO series on the Disney film. The Princess is the meeting between Arya Stark and Brienne of Tarth. With a little more dialogue and a series with several seasons, it could almost follow in the footsteps of a certain Buffy…
