The rains block the railway to the port of Rio Grande and put a strain on grain shipments, Anec says

The railway that brings grain to the port of Rio Grande has been hit by floods in Rio Grande do Sul and is no longer operational, which challenges the operation of the important port unit, the National Association of Grain Exporters said (Anec). this Tuesday, to Reuters.

The port, Brazil’s fourth-largest soybean exporter last year, uses grain stored before the rains, as well as product that arrives at the site via alternative road routes.

According to Anec, due to blockages on main roads to the port of Rio Grande, trucks loaded with grain had to travel an additional 400 km, increasing the cost of road transport.

Anec commented that so far the port’s activity has not been compromised, but the situation raises concern.

“Given the difficulties in accessing the port, increasing the route by 400 km represents an additional cost for goods, but is a necessary measure to maintain continuity of operations,” Anec said.

The “top-off” operation, to supplement soy cargoes from Argentina, continues despite challenges, the association said.

According to the shipping agency Cargonave, grain arrivals at the port of Rio Grande have decreased in recent days due to floods that prevent access.

Cargonave added that the terminals also used grains available in warehouses.

When contacted the railway concessionaire, Rumo did not comment on the matter.

The National Agency for Land Transport (ANTT) had declared the day before that there had been 63 railway blockades in Rio Grande do Sul.
