It’s been 8 years since ‘Batman vs. Superman’ and the film, directed by Zack Snyder and starring Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, continues to give fans something to talk about.
One scene in particular has become the subject of great controversy for fans.
Before reading on, keep in mind that important moments about the film will be discussed, which may be considered “spoilers”.
The controversial scene from ‘Batman vs. Superhuman’
Without a doubt, the most controversial moment of the film takes place at the moment of greatest tension, when Superman and Batman are in the middle of a battle, facing a seemingly disastrous outcome. However, just before the Dark Knight finishes off the superhero from another planet, the latter says a name: Martha.
This causes a “flashback” to Bruce Wayne about his mother, whose name is the same as his rival’s. With this seemingly inconsequential gesture, Batman decides to put aside the kryptonite spear in his hands and spare his Superman’s life.
Some fans argue that this plot twist is forced and lacks depth, while others see it as an emotionally powerful moment that humanizes both characters.
Zack Snyder explains the Martha scene in ‘Batman vs. Superhuman’
In a recent interview with GQ, director Zack Snyder talked about this scene and gave his take on why he chose to include it in the film.
“When [el guionista] Chris Terrio and I were talking about it, he said, “You know their mothers have the same name.
Quiero decir, realmente, [Batman] I could kill him in a second, literally a second, so I thought, “Okay, he’s got to do all the tricks possible.”
Martha’s scene in ‘Batman vs. Superman’ was Snyder’s attempt to humanize Superman and show that, despite their differences, Batman and his adversary have a lot in common.
