Based on the manga by Hitoshi Iwaaki, Parasyte: The Gray is a Netflix series that has been very well received by critics. In a dystopian world, alien life forms arrive on Earth and begin invading human bodies, taking control of them.
Su-In (Jeon So-nee), after being attacked on her way home by an aggressive man, becomes infected with a parasite that saves her, but fails to gain control over Su-In’s brain. The two will now have to coexist in the same body as they try to save the world from these parasites that feed on other humans. The series only has six episodes and ended up leaving some questions hanging in the air in its final moments. Let’s explain better what happened at the end of Parasyte: The Grey.
Parasite: Gray’s ending explained
In the latest episode of the series, Su-In and Kang-woo (Koo Kyo-hwan) have a revelation about the shepherd’s true intentions after he stages a massacre against his own kind. Kang-woo realizes that an upcoming festival will bring the mayor of Namcheon to town, which Pastor can use to get closer to the politician. After the discovery of the Saejin Church and its parasites, the authorities are considering canceling the festival, which could hinder the pastor’s plans.
However, the Shepherd’s orchestrated parasitic attack on Detective Kim Chul-min’s (Kwon Hae-hyo) body convinces the government to go ahead with the event, believing that all parasites in the intermediaries have been exterminated.
The Parasitic Shepherd has sought a more official role in human governance since his creation, interested in humans’ ability to control populations. He initially founded his own church community, but his ambition grew, leading him to infiltrate human government. With the help of Won-seok (Kim In-kwon), his human companion, he devises a plan to get closer to the mayor, with the aim of taking over his body and gaining political power in the region.
After Su-in and Kang-woo deduce the pastor’s plans, they realize that they must do something before he becomes too powerful. Su-In agrees to meet Kang-woo’s sister, Kyung-hee (Yoon Hyun-gil), who is infected with a parasite and was hunting Heidi, almost killing her. However, ever since the parasites landed on earth, they have all possessed a great sense of loyalty.
The way they acted when they discovered that there was a parasite used to detect the presence of others, declaring him to be a traitor, or the hostility towards Heidi simply because she lives in the same body with a human being, demonstrates the importance of the identity they have and how unforgivable the betrayal is for them.
So, when Kyung-hee discovers her leader’s involvement in the recent massacre of her species, something changes inside her. She then chooses to help Heidi/Su-In and Kang-woo, seeking revenge for her companions killed by the Shepherd.
Heidi tries to warn Mrs. Choi (Lee Jung-hyun), who was ordered to move cities under a false lead about the existence of other parasites based on reports from Detective Kim, who obviously did so so that the Team Gray won’t intrude on your plans. Choi’s distrust of Su-in and Heidi prevents her from believing their words at first, but she thinks better of it and decides to follow her instincts and go to the festival.
At the festival, the pastor attacks the mayor and Won-seok pretends to kill him so he can be close to the mayor while the pastor’s head is hidden under his jacket so he can take care of the mayor’s body away from the eyes of the public. His plan would be useless if everyone knew that a parasite had taken over the mayor’s body.
He needed to do it behind the scenes so that it did not change the weight of the political position he wanted to take. Luckily, Heidi, Kang-woo and Kyung-hee arrive to stop the pastor’s plans. After managing to escape from Choi in the parking lot, Kyung-hee arrives at the building in time to stop the pastor from attacking the mayor. She fights him to buy time for Kang-woo and the mayor to escape, but she ends up dying in the process.
The shepherd can only remain disconnected from a body for a certain period of time, and when time is running out, he tears off Won-seok’s head and takes control of his body to survive and pursue his main goal, and almost there succeeds had it not been for Heidi who had arrived just in time. Finally the intense battle between Heidi and the parasite leader takes place.
Eventually, Choi arrives where Heidi and the shepherd in Won-seok’s body are fighting and finds herself in a stalemate: either she shoots Su-In, who she already knows is a parasite, or Won-seok, someone believes be a human being. At the last minute, she sees the back of Won-seok’s head in a reflection, which is blank, and decides to trust Heidi by aiming the gun and shooting at Won-seok’s body, while Heidi defends her from the parasite attacking her the same time.

When Choi asks Heidi why she didn’t attack her, Heidi explains that the trust she placed in Choi at that moment was inspired by the trust Su-In freely places in people, making clear the depth of the impression Su-In he left. about the parasite living in your body. After all, Choi decides to let Su-In free to live her life like a normal person.
Su-in’s life hasn’t been easy, abandoned by her mother when she was very young, becoming the target of an abusive father, and being seen as a monster by her neighbors after reporting the abuse she suffered. She was attacked in many ways, but gradually Su-In realized that her actions did not make her a monster, but connected her to people who valued her, such as Detective Kim (before he was possessed by the parasitic leader ) and Kang -woo.
Furthermore, Heidi was always willing to protect her like no one had ever done before. After returning to her normal life, Su-In is visited by Kang-woo, who now works for the Gray Team. He hands her a letter from Heidi and informs her that he has an offer to join Ms. Choi’s team. Part of Heidi’s letter is not shown, only the beginning, which is read by Kang-woo, and the last sentence: “Whether you like it or not, you are not alone.”
Who is Shinichi Izumi?
In the final moments of the latest episode of Parasyte: The Grey, a new figure appears: Shinichi Izumi. For those who don’t know this name, in Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga, Shinichi is the protagonist who, like Su-In, becomes the host of a parasite called Migi.
Its parasite, in this case, is housed in the young man’s right arm (yes, in the same hand he holds out to Ms. Choi). In the series, he is played by Masaki Suda, a Japanese actor, introduced as a supposed journalist who specializes in parasites and has valuable information to share with Choi.
In the manga Shinichi is a teenager, while in the series he is represented by an adult, which implies that the events of Parasyte: The Gray occurred after the events of the manga, but nothing has been clarified by Ms. Netflix, who remains silent on the possible second production season.
