In the “Brigerton” book series written by Julia Quinn, the relationship between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington develops differently from the TV version, and their engagement scene is different from what we saw in the third season.
How does Colin propose to Penelope in the Netflix series ‘Bridgerton’?
In the fourth chapter of “Bridgerton 3”, Penelope and Colin fight in a carriage because she ruined her engagement to Lord Deblin, who actually had a genuine interest in the young woman.
In this situation, Colin reveals that he could not allow her to marry Lord Deblin, as he developed feelings for her after they shared a kiss. This prompts a passionate moment between the two as the carriage heads towards the Bridgerton mansion. Arriving at the property, the young protagonist asks his beloved to come down with him, and although she initially refuses, after uttering the line “For God’s sake, Penelope Featherington, will you marry me or not?”, she agrees. a look of surprise and the scene leaves a black background.
This is how the first part of ‘Brigerton 3’ ends according to the series, but in the books there are some small but very important differences. First of all, Netflix promoted the marriage proposal, since in the fourth book ‘Seducing Mr. Bridgerton’ happens in a very different way.
Colin proposes to Penelope in the books after discovering she is Lady Whistledown
According to Julia Quinn’s text, it all starts after Penelope asks Colin to kiss her and after he does, he gets embarrassed and leaves angrily. Later, he goes to Penelope’s house to apologize, but notices that she is getting into a carriage headed for town.
He decides to follow her, and when he stops at a church, the red-haired girl leaves an envelope, so Colin discovers that she is Lady Whistledown. Fury in his eyes for keeping his dual identity a secret, he overpowers Penelope as she gets into her carriage to return home.
While the transfer is underway, they argue over the plot of Whistledown, but strong feelings get to both of them and they end up kissing in the carriage, as well as sharing an intimate moment where Colin touches Penelope’s breasts.
After arriving at Featherington Manor, Colin alights first and asks Penelope to do the same with the phrase heard in the sequence to formally propose to her mother, Lady Portia, to marry him.
What happens next in Quinn’s novel is that the young woman falls from the carriage in a daze, which adds a funny touch to the scene. They both enter and after some communication problems with her mother, they become engaged, making it clear that their wedding will take place in exactly one month.
As you might notice, although the transfer scenarios are similar, the context changes completely and the question now is what will happen in the fifth chapter when Colin and Penelope enter the Bridgerton mansion, since this does not happen in the books.
