While exploring Mars, the Perseverance rover took photos of rocks that NASA described as “popcorn” due to their texture. see the picture
A NASA published an unusual photo of Mars this Tuesday (18). According to the space agency’s publication, the Rover Perseverance just arrived in the region called Bright Angel (“Bright Angel”, in free translation), and found rocks with textures never seen before, which received the delicious nickname “popcorn”.

Perseverance – or simply Percy, as he is affectionately called by scientists – went there after finishing studies of the rocks at Mount Washburn. The robotic explorer headed north and then stopped in front of layers of light-colored rocks.
The visit to the site was important for scientists to observe the rocks that form Bright Angel for the first time. Additionally, Percy took a series of photos of the rocks before heading west, where there was a larger, more accessible area.
Well, it was in the 1,175 sols (name given to days on Mars, which are a little longer than those on Earth) of the mission that Perseverance got there and surprised scientists with the images. The rocks were light in color and strangely textured, marked by sharp cracks with thin mineral channels.
They also noticed that some rocks were marked with small spheres. “We jokingly call them ‘textures.’ Popcorn‘” wrote Athanasios Klidaras, a doctoral student at Purdue University in the US.
According to the author, these structures suggest that, after the deposition of the rocks, there was a flow of underground water. Now Perseverance will gradually climb the rocky region, collecting data as he continues there.
Over the weekend, the rover will use its abrasion tool to collect data on the chemical composition of the material on site. Depending on the results, the mission team can order Perseverance to collect a champion of the region.
