Does Daemon really love Rhaenyra or is he just after the throne? The books and series match

The relationship between Daemon Targaryen and Rhaenyra Targaryen was one of the most discussed topics of “House of the Dragon”. As uncle and niece, their bond has evolved throughout the series, leaving fans to wonder if their union is based on true love or ambition for the throne.

Love or ambition? The complicated relationship between Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen in “House of the Dragon”

Since the first season, the two have shared an undeniable connection. Daemon, the rebellious and volatile brother of King Viserys, sees Rhaenyra as an equal, someone who defies expectations and dares to live life on her own terms. For her part, Rhaenyra admires Daemon’s strength and passion, finding in him a companion in adventure and confidante.

However, as the series progresses, doubts are raised about Daemon’s true intentions. Some argue that the king’s brother Viserys I, known for his ambition and recklessness, could manipulate Rhaenyra to secure his place in the line of succession.

This idea mainly comes from the second chapter of “House of the Dragon” when Rhaenyra argues with Daemon about accidentally killing Prince Jaehaerys after she didn’t want it to happen and expresses that she doesn’t trust him anymore.

It is then that, in her rage, the Daemon exposes that Viserys I appointed her as his successor to the throne because he was a coward and was afraid to see him as the ruler of Westeros. But Rhaenyra counters his argument by stating that he could not be the next king because he was not a trustworthy person.

Daemon has shown his love to Rhaenyra in his own way

Despite the doubts that have been publicly expressed about Daemon’s love throughout the series and the “Blood and Fire” book, it has been shown that he truly feels genuine affection, and his various actions support it.

On several occasions we saw Daemon defend Rhaenyra in her adolescent and adult stages. For example, when the paternity of her and Laenor’s children was disputed, Velaryon literally cut off the head of a man who called them bastards.

When they were husband and wife, this defense on his part always remained active as he protected her from possible attacks that she could receive from the Hightower house without hesitation. Daemon also shows a more vulnerable and protective side when he is with her, an aspect rarely seen in his interactions with other characters.

On the other hand, since Aegon II was imposed as king, even though she was the heir, Daemon showed loyal loyalty to her as he was her guide to prepare plans of attack against the Green Council and obey her orders such as eradicating Aemond Targaryen gone wrong.

In conclusion, the poses and the Demon make the viewer doubt his true intentions, but it is clear that there are genuine feelings, but also a search for individual strength and making a mark on the Dance of Dragons.
