SP: Government fires civilian police officer who killed man, injured 5 women while off duty

The employee’s dismissal was published in the Official Gazette of the State; the defendant will have to appear in Jury Court in March 2025

The government of São Paulo has fired civil police officer José Ricardo Gomes Ferreira, 53, accused of opening fire and killing a man, as well as wounding five women, while off dutyThe crime took place in October 2019, when Ferreira was working as a security guard in the center of the capital.

Ferreira’s exclusion from the staff of the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) of São Paulo was made official in the Official Gazette of the State on Wednesday 3. He violated two articles of the Organic Law of the SP Police, which concern “irregular procedure, of a serious nature” and “commission of physical harm”.

At the time of the crime, Ferreira was assigned to the 3rd Police Station for the Defense of Women, but was off duty and working as a security guard for merchants in downtown São Paulo, escorting goods in the Rua 25 de Março region.

According to the SP Public Prosecutor, the former civil police officer argued with two men and was initially attacked. In self-defense, he pulled out his gun and shot at the attackers, in the middle of the crowd, to scare them.

The officer then chased the men and shot one of them. Once on the ground, the victim was shot three more times. Five women ended up being hit by Ferreira’s shots and all survived. He was later charged by the MPSP with qualified homicide, without the possibility of defending the victim and using a resource that involved common danger, and attempted homicide.

In the trial, the defense of the former police officer argued that the attackers tried to take his firearm and that the shots that hit the other victims were accidental, in the heat of the fight. The Court of São Paulo has scheduled a hearing on the case for March 24, 2025.

OR Earth try to contact Ferreira’s defense. The space remains open for demonstrations.
