Back to the Future: Hardly anyone knows it exists, but the fourth movie came out in 1991!

We are no longer presenting Back to the Future, this spectacular adventure through time that has captured the hearts of an entire generation since 1985 through three iconic films. But few people know: there is an official sequel to Back to the Future 3, which was released in 1991 – and no, we’re not talking about Back to the Future: the animated series, which itself has a sequel in the comics! – which featured the return of Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown and Thomas F. Wilson as Biff Tannen.

This fourth part is, in some ways, a project that has been overlooked, simply for the good reason that it was not released as a movie in theaters, because its fate should have followed the attraction of the theme park Universal. The idea had already been hatched by franchise producer Steven Spielberg in the mid-80s, but it wasn’t officially announced until 1989, the year Back to the Future 2 was released.

However, it will be without March

This “Back to the Future 4” was first presented in 1991 at the Universal theme park in Florida, and later in Hollywood, San Francisco and Osaka, Japan.

The plot of “Back to the Future: The Walk” begins after the end of the third part with a noticeable absence: Michael J. Fox. The actor was indeed offered the chance to take part, but rejected the idea of reviving his character – someone who has never been convinced of a new version of Marty and the Doctor’s adventures on the small or big screen.

Perhaps that’s why it’s about the final showdown between Doc and Biff Tannen. As for Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, the creators of the franchise, they also did not participate, but still gave their approval, saying that those responsible understood the saga and the character of the Doctor. That said, they have always been categorical: a real continuation is impossible.

The movie is set in 1991, when Doc founded the Institute of Future Technology, where he offers visitors the chance to experience an 8-passenger DeLorean that they can ride in. Meanwhile, Doc arrives in 2015 to verify that the space-time line has not been affected by what happened in the previous films. At the same time, other scientists of the Institute travel between 1885 and 1955. Things get complicated when Tannen steals the DeLorean time machine: the audience then ends up racing through time to chase it.

Steven Spielberg, which is trying to match the success of Disneyland’s Star Tours, served as creative consultant on the project. However, the attraction’s decline in popularity in the early 2000s led to its closure in 2007, although its Japanese version continued to operate until 2016. In Hollywood and Florida, it is the Simpsons ride that changed it – we can also find the doors open to the top of the DeLorean, transformed into a new car dedicated to the animated yellow family, and the Minions Ride opened its doors in its place in Japan.

You can still watch the Back to the Future trilogy streaming on Prime Video.
