The podcast of the moment, “The Woman from the Abandoned House” will turn into a series. This was revealed by the production manager of the audio attraction, the journalist Chico Felitti.

“The series has a lot of people interested. I was sought by God and the world. Anyone you can think of,” Felitti said during her participation in the São Paulo Biennial of the Book this weekend. “I agree with Folha and I also think it is right that the podcast air first. But everything indicates that it will happen.”

“The Woman in the Abandoned House” will have a total of seven episodes. Six have already been made available – for free on the main audio platforms, such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Deezer – and the last, extra episode, is an interview of about 2 hours with Margarida Bonetti, the Brazilian wanted by the FBI, who lives in the now famous palace of Higienópolis.

Launched by Folha on June 1, the podcast is an investigative report on the inhabitant of the decrepit house on Rua Piauí. Called Mari in the podcast, she is called Margarida Bonetti, born rich and lived for many years in the United States with her husband and the maid who had been “given” by her parents, the original owners of that house. .

The maid who worked for the couple was held in private prison without pay for 20 years, suffering physical and psychological abuse. She illiterate, she despaired of finding herself far from her family, speaking no English and sick – with a tumor that her “bosses” would not allow her to cure. Until a neighbor of hers realized what she was calling and reported it to the police. René Bonetti, husband of “Mari”, was sentenced to more than 6 years of imprisonment and to the payment of fines and compensation to the victim.

But Margarida managed to escape to Brazil in the late 1990s, before being tried in the United States. At the time her father was dead and she used the excuse of coming to her funeral and she never returned to the United States.

Once in the countryside, he settled in his family’s old mansion, where he still lives today, makes rare public appearances, and has used a thick layer of white ointment on his face ever since. For this reason, his figure was mistaken for a ghost by the residents of the region.

The story still foresees a quarrel with two sisters over the family inheritance and the health situation of the mother, who lives confined in the house with Margarida.

Due to its sadistic and sinister details, the story went viral. First of all, on TikTok, after a “true crime” tiktoker made a video in front of the house and reached over 1 million likes. From there, the story hit Instagram and Twitter, turning the “Abandoned House” into a destination for memes and criminal tourism.
