“Star Trek: Section 31” Returns the Oscar-Winning Actress to Her Role in “Star Trek: Discovery”
The Paramount+ platform has released the trailer for “Star Trek: Section 31”, the new “Star Trek” film starring Michelle Yeoh, winner of the 2023 Oscar for “Everything in Everywhere at the Same Time”.
The project is the first film in the franchise developed for streaming and will reunite the actress as Empress Philippa Georgiou from the “Star Trek: Discovery” series.
The trailer strikes a more rebellious tone for the nearly 60-year-old franchise, and is accompanied by contemporary music (Beyoncé’s “Formation”) and visual design that breaks from “Star Trek” tradition. At one point, an officer tells Georgiou that he’s there to stop her from killing people, to which the Empress replies, “That’s a cute idea.” In another scene, a character describes Georgiou as “a f**king woman.”
The two-minute video also includes the first appearance of a young Philippa Georgiou, played by Miku Martineau (“Honor Society”), as well as revealing the titular team, consisting of Omari Hardwick (“Power”), Sam Richardson (“Veep”), Kacey Rohl (“The Magicians”), Robert Kazinsky (“Pacific Rim”), Sven Ruygrok (“Pulse”) and Humberly González (“The Death Tarot”).
The journey of the star
The plot will show how Georgiou joined a secret division of Starfleet, which operates clandestinely to protect the United Federation of Planets. Section 31 also appeared in the second season of “Star Trek: Discovery,” and those involved in the new project are veterans of that series: the screenplay and direction are respectively handled by Craig Sweeny and Olatunde Osunsanmi, both of “Star Trek: Discovery.”
The production of “Star Trek: Section 31” began in 2018 and was originally going to be a series centered on the division of Starfleet intelligence, again with Yeoh’s involvement. However, the project remained without updates for a long time and many believed that the idea had been abandoned. In fact, behind the scenes he was still busy with a reformulation, transferring the concept from the series to the film.
Produced by CBS Studios, “Star Trek: Section 31” does not yet have a release date.
