Huerzeler proud of Brighton’s final victory over Manchester United

New Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Huerzeler said he was proud of his side’s performance in beating Manchester United 2-1 on Saturday, with the winning goal coming in injury time.

Brighton went top of the table in their first home game of the Premier League season and almost lost 2-1 had United’s second goal not been ruled out for offside.

With the game still tied, under torrential rain at the Amex, João Pedro scored in the fifth minute of injury time, giving the south coast club all three points. On the bench, Huerzeler, 31, celebrated fervently and tried to stir up the crowd.

“It was very emotional, it’s always when you get the win in the last minute. I think we deserved to win, we played a good game, not a perfect game. There were situations where United had a chance to win the game,” Huerzeler told the BBC. “I’m very proud of the team, they showed the value of never giving up and that’s very important to me.”

“I think the first half was balanced and then in the second half we started to control the game very well. We had a lot of chances, especially in the second half.” Brighton looked in control until United equalised through Amad Diallo and Erik ten Hag’s side took control of the game.

Huerzeler however changes with Simon who, although late, arrives and in less than five minutes provides the assist for the winning goal. With this result Brighton remains in the lead with six points.

“Their goal, for me, came out of nowhere. I didn’t like losing control. But after the offside goal, I think we regained control of the game. In the end, I think we deserved to win,” Huerzeler said.

“João is a player who can decide the game with a single action. The way he worked against the ball was impressive. In the end it is always a victory for the team and that is the most important thing.”
