Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2 brought its share of twists and turns, some of which are major for the series. But what we didn’t see is Eleven’s new power (Millie Bobby Brown). He will obviously find new opportunities later in the season. And most importantly!
Eleven’s abilities are gradually revealed throughout the series, but Season 4 gives her quite a bit of time. Given that Eleven lost her powers at the end of Season 3, much of her arc this season revolves around her “rehabilitation.” He was tasked with restoring them, even strengthening them so that he could face Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) as an equal.
Not only does his power return, but it looks like he also added an extra string to his bow at the end of Volume 2. However, Lucas explains that Max was actually dead for a full minute before Eleven used her powers to revive him. And even though Max is in a deep coma, Elven still manages to revive him, which naturally raises a lot of questions about how this new power works.
The answer likely has to do with how Eleven’s powers work in conjunction with Vecna’s own abilities. First, let’s consider that Vekna and her abilities caused Max’s death. So it would make sense for Eleven to counter whatever ability caused this and reverse its effects.
Vecna has been repeatedly shown to rely on the negative and painful memories of his victims to kill them. We see this when he uses Max’s memories, more specifically his memories of Billy, to turn him against him. So it only makes sense that together and all the happy memories of pure friendship that Max shared with Elven, the latter can bring him back.
That said, things need to be nuanced. Because these memories all correspond to moments of Max and Elven’s complicity. A priori, he couldn’t find access to Max’s memories in his mind, as Vekna knows how to do. Which suggests that it may be Elven’s own emotional reaction to these events that allows him to revive Max.
Given that her powers were used when she was especially angry to cause harm, it makes sense that the opposite could also be true, and that recalling positive memories and emotions allows Eleven’s extraordinary powers to help her friend. This type of motivation has been seen before in the series, when Eleven used her mother’s memories to send Henry Creel, aka the One, to the Upside Down.
Similarly, Mikey’s confession of his love helps him and allows him to free himself from Vecna’s grasp and drive her away just as he is about to finish Max off.
Important detail: Eleven uses her powers to reanimate Max when he’s in the Void and not in the real world. This can have an impact. And then the fourth season started with Eleven trying to get her powers back. He recovered in a very short time. Volume 2 emphasizes the fact that Eleven is less powerful than Vecna. The fact that he survived his own murder alone confirms this point.
That said, the project allowed Nina Elven to take on Henry Creel again. He can enter the void again and has regained his telekinetic abilities. And she clearly has a better understanding of her powers thanks to her training at Project Nina and the memories she has derived from them.
Eleven can become more powerful in the long run if she can use her relationships with people and the love she has for them to enhance her powers. This clearly strengthens it.
