After the success of The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas inspires French adventure cinema like never before. Nine years after the best first film of 2017, Caesar, filmmaker Huda Benjamin offers a feminine and feminist reinterpretation of the Dumas classic.
It all started with four lines left on the director’s desk. “In this brief review I was intrigued to discover that the D’Artagnans were Moriscos, a community of Spanish Muslims who were forced to convert to Catholicism and who found refuge in France after the Inquisition before being driven out again under Louis XIII.“, he explains in the press kit.
In the shoes of the new Musketeers, we find Oulaya Amamra (D’Artagnan), Daphne Patakia (Aramitsi), Deborah Loukoumouena (Portau) and Sabrina Ouazani (Athos). This is the first time in French cinema that women play these characters.
Being on a man’s feet
“What a man can do, a woman can do… and the Musketeers, why not us?he continues. Through an adventure film I wanted to question identity and gender, maybe that’s what resonates with time!“
To test their credibility as men, the actors tried an experiment during the preparation of the film: “We hit the streets to find out what a man really feels. Well, we all agreed with what Portau said, “with a dick, you’re less afraid”…“
