The smell of happiness: “This role is a blessing” … Carolin Anglad talks about Paulin’s character in the adaptation

This Wednesday, October 8, France 2 broadcasts one of the most popular novels of one of the most popular novels in Virginia: The smell of happiness is stronger in the rain. A moving story that should be touched by both fans and viewers who have never read the book.

Conducted by a 5-star actor, these four episodic mini series promises to move you. On the feast of La Rochelle Fiction Festival, the editorial team of separation was able to meet Carolin Anglad, who plays Paulin. Self -confident!

Separation: What did this project and this character attract?

Caroline Anglade: Already, all the density and all these emotions you should apply. The topic of family, family drama is what is hardened, what makes me cry. Yes, the whole range of emotions, the evolution of the character…

At first, we really do not understand why it is so, then slowly calms down. There was a meeting with the script, Baia Kasm, and Virginia’s Grimald, whose work I already knew little. Then, I rarely had the opportunity to play such a difficult role, so between comedy and drama.

You fell in love with Paulin’s story and character, so …

It was immediate. There are scenarios where everything is suddenly crystal. And there, from the first pages I felt it. So when I met Baia and decided that I was going to do it, I was happy. Sometimes you feel this connection, but it doesn’t happen.

Although there, I felt instinctively Paulin. I didn’t say to myself, “Ah, it will be difficult, I feel distant from it.” In contrast, I had the impression of understanding the situations, understanding his feelings, his emotion. It was quite obvious to me.

Do we have some pressure when we have to consider the character that fans so loved?

Yes, completely, because the imagination of each reader already exists. Of course, we already have an idea of the characters. Now, beyond the book, I took a script and told myself that it would also be a director’s touch.

The main thing is what Virginia tells us in its story, fiction is felt. We cannot skip the theme of the family and everything we will discuss. The main thing was not the betrayal of the book’s soul.

After that, we accept that we move from novel to fiction and there will be evolution and transformation. I hope in any case the reader will be happy because it is very difficult and sometimes there is an adaptation that is frustrated. Hope it isn’t.

In fact, Paulin has a very current voice in the book. How did you manage to translate without us without us without us?

This applies to what we have experienced. What I love you do not have to explain what you feel is that it is suddenly in silence … if you are well shot, it is well, well lit, everything is transferred.

In fact, this is a little matter of filmmaking and director, as we do not control what we are looking for in ourselves. I was lucky that I was very, very well -supported at the technical level, which helps the actor to overcome.

But it turns out that I was already very much in the role and what Paulin is going to do. I didn’t feel like I was doing a crazy job, except that I allowed myself to be my partners who are all exceptions.

I was crazy about playing with them, I met deeply sincere people. And when the other side, we have an answer and a real listening, we don’t have much to do. There were only investment actors, and there we rely on each other.

And Heartbreak is a universal experience …

Yes. And it’s cool, because today, I’m 40 years old, and when you experience things in life, you know that sometimes passing these moments is sometimes a gap. But to do this, in order to be able to, at the moment, to the role, to express what you have already done, it is almost therapeutic.

It was annoying to me because I really felt like that. Although I did not experience everything he had experienced, I was very related to him and also Virginia. During lunch, we would start a lot to each other and find a lot. This has contributed to the nourishment of my character. This role is a blessing, it is really a gift.

Is this the strongest role of your career?

Now, I’m still in it. Yes, I would say that this is one of the most powerful and sensitive roles that I have to protect, because inside the drama is also a lot of humor and lightness. There is a pathos in these very strong emotions.

When we experience drama, it can be humorous and there is also a deep breath. It’s wonderful because it is life: drama, laughter, all mixed together. And I realize that in the series, it’s all and even more dense in the last episodes.

Is the light in the most dark moments?

Exactly. Even an absolute drama, somewhere there is light. And it’s beautiful. This is a note of hope and this is universal because we are all going to lose sorrow and loss. This is life. This is how we find the resource, how at the moment, the light still shines.

You are on almost every scene. How did you manage to shoot? Have long days?

No, it happened very quickly. Generally, when I am specified, I have an investment in the role, I can’t see the time. This is what gives me the shape, I am less tired when I shoot. The rhythm, the excitement of the team, the team… and there, we were very united.

We cried together, laughing together. There was very little tension, except for the exhaustion of time. But it gives an emergency and something pretty magical. I think everyone was really happy to do this series. So, frankly, that joy was nothing else.

And it was very difficult at the time of its suspension. And even talking about it, starting the shares, it’s a little difficult, as it means that the project is already slightly behind us. You have to enjoy it, but it’s a bit offended.

And how was your job Xavier Robic Do you get into your characters?

We worked a lot with music. We had common songs that were telling us. To get into these emotional situations, everyone has their little secrets, but sometimes we drink headphones, we listen to the music that we both touched, we looked at each other, and he went straight.

I was lucky enough to find an incredible partner. It is important to emphasize this: When you have a person in front of you, who knows how to listen, who knows how to look, who are not afraid of showing their emotions, there are not many behind them. I was lucky to have met someone who was quite embodied. So I was in love with him for two months (laughs)! This is a little extra thing.

What do you hope that the audience will take away this story?

The light you talk about. That even in the absolute tragedy, there is always something that allows us to consider it. Which is also beautiful is the theme of the brother, the family. Family is the Strait, or can we save relationships with the liberation of our voice?

This is what happens here: gradually, thanks to this tragedy, the languages are reduced and the family turns out to be, thanks to this tragedy. They end in listening to each other, talking to each other, confidently, and there is liberation. This is what you need to remember: Talk to each other, communicate, love each other. And then, if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work, but you have to believe it.
