According to the Civil Police, the elderly man hired healthcare workers after suffering a stroke. Weak, the man sought help with his personal care and routine.
During working hours, health workers drugged the elderly man with drugs in doses higher than prescribed. The goal was to be able to access cards, passwords and personal documents without him realizing it.
According to the Anti-Robbery and Theft (DRF) police station, the group is estimated to have embezzled around R$500,000 in loans, transfers and banking transactions. The scam was discovered after an investigation by the Civil Police, who issued an arrest warrant on Monday.
A 34-year-old caregiver was found in her family’s home in Nova Iguaçu and was arrested preventively for the crimes of theft, false declarations, concealment of assets, rights and values, criminal association, appropriation of the elderly person’s assets and retention of documents guaranteeing the receipt of debts, as required by the Statute of the Elderly.
According to investigations, a bank manager could also be involved in the operation. This is because it would have authorized large-value financial transactions without the presence of the account holder.
The Civil Police is looking for others involved in the plan and is continuing to investigate the case.
