Another 161 migrants land on the island of Lampedusa

A drifting boat, carrying 161 migrants, was rescued by the Italian Coast Guard last Sunday (18), off the coast of the island of Lampedusa, in the south of the country.

The group is made up of men from Syria, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Egypt and landed on Italian territory this Monday (19).

According to reports from the migrants, the vessel set sail from Zwara, Libya around 2 am (local time) last Friday morning (16). Each Bengali paid between 500,000 and 700,000 Bengali taka, while Ethiopians cost $3,000.

All the people were sent to the Contrada Imbriacola “hotspot”, where there are currently 254 migrants.

This is yet another landing on the Italian island, a few hours after the sinking of a boat with over 40 migrants which caused the death of a two-year-old girl. 🇧🇷
