It will be the first live-action Japanese adaptation of the manga.
Netflix has commissioned an adaptation of the classic Japanese manga CityHunter. According to The Hollywood Reporterthe streaming platform has given the green light to a live-action film that will be based on Tsukasa Hojo’s comic book series, which ran from 1985 to 1991.
The series chronicled the exploits of Ryo Saeba, a detective who forms an agency with Hideyuki Makimura. After Hideyuki’s murder, Ryo takes care of the sister of his late classmate, Kaori, and they both try to find out the identity of Hideyuki’s killer.
Ryohei Suzuki has been cast in the lead role of Ryo, with Yuichi Sato directing; Tatsuro Mishima will pen the screenplay for the film, which is scheduled for a 2024 release. The setting will be updated to modern times, and Netflix says it will take place in the “bustling streets of Shinjuku” in Tokyo.
Following his announcement of the role, Suzuki said, “I am delighted to be playing Ryo Saeba and feel a great responsibility to embody this beloved and legendary character created by Tsukasa Hojo. I can’t wait for both current fans and newcomers of everyone to fall in love with Ryo Saeba and his fun-filled, action-packed adventures through modern-day Tokyo.”
Hojo, who also wrote cat’s eye Y Angel Heartrevealed that the manga adaptation CityHunter was more than a decade in the making: “I always hoped that the leading role would be played by someone who really liked CityHunter And, thanks to Ryohei’s unwavering passion, the time has finally come.”

The manga had already been adapted into an anime form in 1987, with films made in France, China, and Hong Kong also based on the series; a South Korean television adaptation was also made in 2011.
The premiere of CityHunter Netflix is ​​scheduled for 2024.
