Rayssa Leal overcomes her injury and is World Champion in Skate Street, Sharjah


The Brazilian skater was dominant from start to finish and won the title after an arm problem. Gabi Mazeto was sixth and Pâmela Rosa eighth

the week of Rayssa Leal started with a crash during training and wrist pain and finished with the title skate street world in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. The 15-year-old Brazilian was spectacular in this Sunday’s final, achieving the highest individual score of the day (87.22) and a sum of 255.58 to secure the gold medal and world champion title in 2022.

This is Rayssa’s first title at age 15, as she celebrated her birthday last month. The maranhense conquers the two main skate street titles, with the World League and the World Championship. Rayssa reaches 80,000 points in the standings and puts “one foot” at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Rayssa Leal fell while participating in a training session at the Street World Championship last Thursday. There were no fractures, but she Rayssa was still in pain and her wrist was bandaged. Even so, she managed to beat 12-year-old Australian phenom Chloe Covell (253.51) and Japanese Olympic champion Momiji Nishiya (253.30) in the final. In the disputes of the final also the Brazilians Gabriela Mazetto (221.45) and Pâmela Rosa (126.52), respectively sixth and eighth.

The competition started with two laps of the track for each athlete. Pâmela Rosa opened the tours for Brazil. The skater failed on his first attempt and scored 12.21. Despite opening with a crash, the second round had a comeback from Pamela, who clocked 43.38.

Gabi Mazetto was the second Brazilian to perform and scored 58.64 because she could not perform her last maneuver. The second attempt was similar and Gabi was unable to raise the grade. To close out, Rayssa Leal clocked 83.32 on the first lap and was one of four athletes to surpass 80 on the track.

In the individual manoeuvres, Pamela and Gabi missed the first attempts. Rayssa performed a smooth maneuver on the largest handrail and achieved a time of 85.04, remaining in contention for the podium. To summarize the leadership in the pursuit of the world title, Fadinha obtained the best score of the day in the third manoeuvre, 87.22. With two holds to go, the Brazilian amassed 258.68.

Pâmela Rosa scored well in the second maneuver, 83.14. The same happened with Gabi, who climbed to 79.35. The two needed a higher note to attempt the podium, after not being noticed in the laps. Pâmela crashed again on her final attempts and finished with a total of 126.52, placing eighth. Mazetto, on the other hand, shod the back of the skate well with a score of 86.43 and moved up to sixth place, with a sum of 221.45.
