Price Is Right announcer reveals his “trick” for telling contestants to “get off!”

the price is right is one of the most iconic game shows in television history and is still going strong in 2022. The show celebrated its 50th anniversary this year with special episodes and the “Come On Down Tour”. who took the show on tour for fans to play in their hometown, with announcer George Gray on hand to make it official. Gray spoke to Gossipify about the enthusiasm of the fans and techniques for spinning the wheel for the tour, and even revealed his “trick” for what happens when he tells contestants to “get off”. during the production of the episode.

George Gray spoke to Gossipify during the “Come On Down Tour!” Stop in Cleveland, Ohio in May. As a fan of the show, I asked him one thing I’ve always wondered: Do you have any advice for correctly pronouncing contestants’ names when you tell them to come in and play? Gray shared what happens on set that viewers don’t see in the episodes airing on CBS:

I have a trick, is that I destroy people’s names. [laughs] I go out and greet the audience before the show starts and I always tell them, “I’m going to ruin your name.” I apologize to you and your family. They don’t tell me how to say your name. If your name is Tara, or Tara, that [spelling] it’s the exact same name! And they don’t tell me how you say it. So if I look at it on paper, I throw a coin in my brain and I don’t know how it is mathematically possible, but I’m still wrong. Yet. And these are the names: wait until I have your last name. If you have like six side by side vowels, good luck. I will do my best. But I messed up everyone’s name.

It turns out that George Gray does not get the correct pronunciation of contestants’ names before announcing who gets to “Get Down!” in each episode, so you have to make your best guess. And according to the advertiser, your best guess somehow “always” turns out to be wrong.

The contestants are still all smiles as they step off the stage and do their best to impress host Drew Carey (who made a bold prediction about the future of the series ), so everything The price is right the experience is clearly a lot of fun. Gray also shared that the show goes to great lengths to make sure the right contestants know when it’s time to try their hand at the competition, saying:

It’s a bit like baseball, because there’s a lot of noise there too. So we don’t want the wrong person to come because it could be quite embarrassing. That’s a long way to your place. So what we do is when I say someone’s name, as soon as I say that name, there’s a page on the stage that has a huge stick and he keeps it with this person’s name written on a huge pen. So there are two ways to know if you are going downhill. And I always tell people, “When you see your name on this card, you can say it mentally as you like.” You pronounce it correctly. Participants can keep these cards as a souvenir later on.

So regardless of how George Gray spells the name, the show makes sure contestants know when it’s their turn to win fabulous prizes. Whether or not they walk away with a new car in their name, or thousands of dollars more than they brought or some other fun reward, they get their IDs remembered! After all, it’s easy to see why the price is right it has been able to resist for half a century, to resist beyond the COVID production challenges and cling to the likes of George Gray and Drew Carey for so long.

In reality, the price is right it also extended into prime time. While the episodes are still airing every day on CBS, the network has occasionally aired prime-time specials to give the show an even bigger platform, and people who can’t watch it on weekday mornings have the opportunity to see her and even play at home. . the price is right returns in prime time Wednesday, June 1 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
